Law of Diminishing Intent

Law of Diminishing Intent

The Law of Diminishing Intent states: The longer you wait to do something you know you should do now, the greater the chances are that you'll never actually do it.

This law applies to every area of our lives, we can refer to it a procrastination, laziness, fear of failure or success, perfectionism, etc. they all boil down to lack of getting started.

In the 12-step recovery movement, men & women in recovery often volunteer their time to speak to others who may also suffer from the disease of addiction, and who are unable to attend regularly scheduled 12-step recovery meetings.

Often the speaker or speakers may say, "make a meeting your first destination upon leaving this facility." Their experience has shown them time and again, people who put off making that first meeting upon release are most likely to suffer a relapse. This is the law of diminishing intent.

Not picking up the phone to call a parent, sibling or other relative, always with the intention of doing so, leads to another day the call doesn't get made, until finally the thought becomes, it's been so long they don't want to hear from me now.

This often quite contrary to the truth, but as human beings we can rationalize our behaviors quite well.

The axiom to this law is quite simply, doing the next you can do, right now. If that's picking up the phone & making that call, so be it. If it's turning on the dishwasher or mowing the lawn, just do something.

Think of something you've had the intention of doing or starting, what is one thing you can think of to get the ball rolling? Do It Now.
