Pre-Paid Legal Associate Al Lewis featured in LOYOLA LIVING magazine

Our Business Partner, Pre-Paid legal Services, Inc. has tons of amazing,
incredible and inspirational stories of people from all walks of life
overcoming seemingly insurmountable odds, to achieve lifestyles many people
gave up even dreaming about.

After 1st seeing Mr. Al Lewis on stage in Oklahoma City in March 2010, Dawn
& I were fortunate enough to meet him in person in Cancun this past June,
just 8 months after his stroke.

We spent over an hour listening to him speak about how the wisdom he applies
in his life, helped him to be sitting poolside on a company all-expenses
paid retreat that he continued to qualify for every month.

Now if a guy who suffered a stroke can make $9500 in a month and maintain
his qualification to bring his wife & himself on vacation-while recovering-I
mean what's your excuse gonna be?- "My
wife/husband/mother/father/sister/brother/kids/boss/German shepherd won't
let me."

Pre-Paid Legal Services, Inc. (NYSE: PPD) Associate Al Lewis (of Chicago) is
featured in a cover story of LOYOLA LIVING, a magazine published by the
Loyola University Health System, a nationally recognized leader in
healthcare services in Chicago.

Al was a patient at Loyola, following a stroke he suffered in October 2009
while he was involved in a business presentation. Before joining PPD, Al
was a truck driver for a national delivery company. In his current PROFILES
OF SUCCESS, Al said, "I hesitate to think what would have happened to me and
my family financially if I still had [the truck driving] job.

I had catastrophic medical insurance to take care of my medical bills but
nothing in place to help meet my other financial responsibilities nothing
except Pre-Paid Legal.

While hospitalized for virtually the whole month of October, Pre-Paid Legal
sent me more than $9,500 in commissions. Had it not been for Pre-Paid
Legal, I can't think what would have happened to me."

That's a great story. And here is a link to the LOYOLA LIVING article about
Al's recovery and the beautiful music he is now making:

Outside the Comfort Zone

Outside the Comfort Zone
Things We Don’t Want to Do

Putting off doing what scares us and brings up fear only creates more obstacles in our lives.

Most of us have had the experience of tackling some dreaded task only to come out the other side feeling invigorated, filled with a new sense of confidence and strength. The funny thing is, most of the time when we do them, we come out on the other side changed and often wondering what we were so worried about or why it took us so long. We may even begin to look for other tasks we’ve been avoiding so that we can feel that same heady mix of excitement and completion.

Whether we avoid something because it scares us or bores us, or because we think it will force a change we’re not ready for, putting it off only creates obstacles for us. On the other hand, facing the task at hand, no matter how onerous, creates flow in our lives and allows us to grow. The relief is palpable when we stand on the other side knowing that we did something even though it was hard or we didn't want to do it. On the other hand, when we cling to our comfort zone, never addressing the things we don't want to face, we cut ourselves off from flow and growth.

We all have at least one thing in our life that never seems to get done. Bringing that task to the top of the list and promising ourselves that we will do it as soon as possible is an act that could liberate a tremendous amount of energy in our lives. Whatever it is, we can allow ourselves to be fueled by the promise of the feelings of exhilaration and confidence that will be the natural result of doing it.

Evaluating Your Associations

Look at the power of influence in our lives and see how it is possible to be nudged off course a little at a time until, finally, we find ourselves asking, “How did I get here?”

Ask yourself three key questions:

“Who am I around?” You've got to evaluate everybody who is able to influence you in any way.

“What are these associations doing to me?” That's a major question to ask. What have they got me doing, listening to, reading, thinking and feeling? You've got to make a serious study of how others are influencing you, both negatively and positively.

Is that okay?” Maybe everyone you associate with has been a positive, energizing influence. Then again, maybe there are some bad apples in the bunch. All I'm suggesting here is that you take a close and objective look. Everything is worth a second look, especially the power of influence. Both will take you somewhere, but only one will take you in the direction you need to go.

Now let's discuss three ways to handle associations or relationships that are holding you back.

1) Disassociate. This is not an easy decision, nor something you should take lightly, but in some cases it may be essential. You may just have to make the hard choice not to let certain negative influences affect you anymore. It could be a choice that preserves the quality of your life.

2) Limited association. Spend major time with major influences and minor time with minor influences. It is easy to do just the opposite, but don't fall into that trap. Take a look at your priorities and your values. We have so little time at our disposal. Wouldn't it make sense to invest it wisely?

3) Expanding your associations. This is the one I suggest you focus on the most. Find other successful people who you can spend more time with. Invite them to lunch (pick up the tab) and ask them how they have achieved so much or what makes them successful. Now, this is not just about financial success; it can be someone who you want to learn from about having a better marriage, being a better parent, having better health or a stronger spiritual life.

It is called association on purpose—getting around the right people by expanding your circle of influence. And when you do that, you will naturally limit the relationships that are holding you back. Give it a try and see for yourself.

Guest Post: Make a Dent in the Universe

"Your time is limited, so don't waste it living someone else's life.

Don't be trapped by dogma - which is living with the results of
other people's thinking. Don't let the noise of other's opinions
drown out your own inner voice. And most important, have the
courage to follow your heart and intuition. They somehow already
know what you truly want to become. Everything else is secondary."-Steve Jobs

Most of us crave to have an impact.

Most of us desire to make a difference.
We all want to leave things better than we found them.

Apple CEO Steve Jobs used to tell his people that
by showing up at their best, they would have the opportunity
to "make a dent in the world"

Jobs understands that it's important to make a profit
in business. Sure you want your business to run on
excellence. Sure you want high quality products and
services. And sure you need to keep innovating
and growing your brand and your business.

But isn't having an impact in the world by helping your
customers and clients - and positively inspiring
and influencing others - what business is all about?
So a question for you to contemplate is:
What "dent" will you make today? What cause will you
pursue? What contribution will you make... at work,
at home, and in life?

Lead From Within: Each one of us can make a difference
and make a dent in the universe. What will your dent be
this week, this month, this year?

Celebrate all Wins

By now, I hope you have been able to identify your "Little Voice" and start to challenge it when it is giving you a hard time. Last week, you learned how to stop the "Little Voice" so you could you make decisions that are in your best interest instead of giving into the negativity of your "Little Voice".
Today I will give you another technique to manage your "Little Voice". This one will give you the ability to train yourself to feel strong, confident, and powerful by anchoring experiences of success. So, in times of adversity, you can draw on positive experiences to fight off your negative "Little Voice". What does that actually mean?
It's simple, Celebrate all Wins! Every time you experience a little (or big) success, clench your fist, pull it in and say "YESSSS!" This will help you recall this experience of winning and success at a time your "Little Voice" is telling you that you cannot succeed. Your energy will go up AND put you in a winning frame of mind as you deal with whatever challenge may come your way.

Next week, look for another technique on managing your "Little Voice" so you can win the war between your ears and achieve the life of your dreams.

Be awesome!

Do Your Worst, for I Will Do Mine!

"Do Your Worst, for I Will Do Mine!"

By David Blanchard
________________________________________

We are living in a most interesting time. Daily, waves of bad news pound against our already badly damaged economy shaking the fragile underpinnings of business and our personal lives. When we personally experience any of these very real, yet unwanted difficulties, we can easily be swept away into the depths of anxiety, frustration and despair.

It is difficult enough to swim against the tide, let go of the anxiety and climb up and out of these circumstances without adding the burden of destructive and unhealthy thought processes. When we engage in destructive thought processes, we engage in fantasy and attempt to put tomorrow's gold in today's purse. We concern ourselves with events, which we may never witness, or we torment ourselves with problems that may never come to pass, that is until they finally become self-fulfilling prophesies.

Og Mandino writes about these unhealthy and destructive habits of thinking, "I have surrendered my free will to the years of accumulated habits and the past deeds of my life have already marked out a path which threatens to imprison my future."

If we get swept into this dark dungeon of the mind it can add enormous amounts of unwanted stress to our lives. Unnecessary stress often results in decreased creativity and productivity, two of the most critical ingredients of success. The inevitable result of these decreases is simply more stress.

In our personal relationships this level of stress can impair our clarity. We can quickly become short-sighted and short-tempered. This slippery slope can destroy commitment and trust, dampen if not destroy much needed intimacy and rip apart once loving relationships. Innocent children often pay the highest price when we are myopic.

However, when we learn to think constructively, we receive inspired ideas, impressions and solutions to problems. This clear vision ignites our passion, which drives our focus, discipline, effort and action. As we live in the now in passion-driven action, people are put on our path whom we can serve and who can serve us. Our natural genius is awakened and accessed. We create tangible results and experience a sense of accomplishment. Our self-esteem heals and our confidence is restored.

When faced with challenges, we create the most we can with what we have been given and see opportunity even if it is limited. We feel connected and alive. In spite of firestorms of life that may be raging around us, we are able to stand with confidence and shout as Albert in the movie, The Count of Monte Cristo, "Do your worst, for I will do mine!"

Viktor Frankl wrote, immediately following his release from a concentration camp, "Everything can be taken from a man but one thing: the last of the human freedoms — to choose one's attitude in any given set of circumstances."

Viktor shared this timely principle in a most poignant context. While in the camp he lost his pregnant wife, his mother and father and several good friends. They were all killed. His life's work, an exhaustive manuscript, was torn up in his face while vile and angry tormenters cursed and scoffed. Everything he had lived for, his family and career, was brutally destroyed.

Viktor and others who were spared from the gas chambers were assigned to grueling work details — an interminable sentence to hell. Beaten down by the shear gravity of their desperate and dire circumstances and with no hope in sight, many gave up. They simply died in their sleep. However, Viktor noted that those who used their minds to vividly visualize constructively, created a clear vision that gave them purpose in their suffering and joy in their journey despite all the catastrophic losses. Many survived.

We would never want to compare the challenges of our day with the horror of a concentration camp. It would be an insult to humanity. What we can do is learn this valuable lesson. In spite of the unspeakable, many still made the conscious decision to exercise the last of the human freedoms — to consciously choose one's attitude in any circumstance, and Viktor meant "any circumstance."

From his words and actions and all those who courageously joined him in this conscious decision to think constructively and live, we can take courage. We can learn how to be okay while standing in the middle of the firestorms of life. When we do, we are free to be in creation — mentally and physically.

To think constructively, find peace of mind and stay in creation, we may have to change some of our old, deeply seated and unhealthy habits of thinking. James Allen wrote, "Let a man radically alter his thoughts and he will be astonished at the rapid transformation it will effect in the material conditions of his life."

It is time to learn the truth about vivid visualization. It is time to know how to use this powerful gift constructively to manifest inspired ideas that will ignite passion and drive action. Let us learn the truth, alter old and destructive habits of thinking and experience the joy and freedom that will inevitably be ours.

Og Mandino says it best in his perennial bestselling book, The Greatest Salesman in the World, "I will begin to awake, each morning, with a vitality I have never known before. My vigor will increase, my enthusiasm will rise, my desire to meet the world will overcome every fear I once knew at sunrise, and I will be happier than I ever believed it possible to be in this world of strife and sorrow."

Taking Control of your Little Voice

Today I will share one of the BEST tips for dealing with your "Little Voice" when it starts sabotaging you, so you can manage it out of the way and put the real YOU back in control:

When your negative "Little Voice" is interfering, holding you back, causing you upset or doubt....

Simply say,"STOP!!!!" Say it out loud! It may sound weird, especially if you are out and about, but that's all it takes to derail your "Little Voice" for a moment. Once you have done that, the real YOU can get back in control and choose the thoughts you really want to have. Remember to focus on what you CAN accomplish, not all the negative input your "Little Voice" was sharing about what cannot be done.

The Law of Attraction

The Law of Attraction

I don't know about you but when I started to learn about the Law

of Attraction I was a little concerned.

Teachers were instructing us to first know what we want, create the

thought, visualize that something then attach emotion to it and it will

then be manifested.

The reason I was concerned was because even though I had tried many

times I could not visualize anything! So if you are having trouble with

visualizations don't worry you're not the only one!

Not everyone has a widescreen movie theater on the inside of their

eyelids. Some people close their eyes and see absolutely nothing! I

just see blackness (technically orange if it's light), but not a clear

picture.

This is one of the main reasons we created the Mind Movie website - to

help me, and in turn, hundreds of others visualize and manifest the life

of their dreams.

Being able to master visualization means being able to tap into the

higher creative power that makes things happen. Combined with

positive emotions you have the electricity to manifest your wildest dreams.

The fact is that most of us don't have complete control over our minds.

Let's face it we have very busy lives and finding the time to visualize

and keeping focus is very difficult.

As soon as I try to relax and think about a specific goal, contradictory

thoughts pop up, and negative thoughts start flooding into my mind,

neutralizing any previous positive thoughts that I had.

I then go into that "inner dialogue" getting cranky with myself for

not being able to focus - can you relate to that as well?

Your predominant thoughts and mental attitude rule and influence

whatever you think about.

If you keep beating yourself up for not being able to visualize effectively

you are just attracting more negative emotions which is not going to bring

you any closer to your goals.

Remember thoughts are things.

My recommendation is to start with short periods of visualization of

your goals. This is easier to achieve and will create positive emotions

and results.

Another effective method is to use a visualization tool such as a vision

board or Mind Movie.

Just going through the process of getting clear about what you want and then creating a vision board or Mind Movie with inspiration and intent can be the trigger for you to easily start the visualization process every time you look at it.

The right music choice for you can also help to trigger inspired visualization especially if combined with photos or affirmations.

This is the reason why a Mind Movie is so powerful as it combines

all three in a very dynamic format.

The goal is to visualize on a regular basis so you can use this

power in an unconscious manner in your everyday affairs.

This is what all successful people do in every field whether it be

consciously or unconsciously.

You know with commitment and dedication we can all attract money, possessions, love, change habits and improve our health as consistently as any successful person.

Your Own Magnificent Obsession

Your Own Magnificent Obsession

All enduring motivation must ultimately come from within the individual. That is why the words empower and envision are so vital to team performance. It must be your inner power and your own personal vision that propels you, not that of your leader.

The success of your efforts depends not so much on the efforts themselves, but rather on your motive for doing them. The greatest companies and the greatest men and women in all walks of life have achieved their greatness out of a desire to express something within themselves that had to be expressed, a desire to solve a problem using their skills as best they could. This is not to say that many of these individuals did not earn a great deal of money and prestige for what they produced. Many did. But the key to their successes was that they were motivated more by an inner magnificent obsession, a passion, than by any thought of profit or identity.

You may recall from history that the exquisitely beautiful armless statue of Venus de Milo was carved by an unknown sculptor. When a farmer dug up the soon-to-be world-famous work of art while plowing his field, a renowned museum curator sadly reflected what a great pity it was that the sculptor would never be recognized by thousands of admirers, nor would he or she ever know how valuable the statue became hundreds of years later.

The farmer retorted that it must have been a labor of love for someone to be able to have envisioned such perfection and brought it forth with just a chisel and a shapeless piece of stone. “Just creating something of such quality,” said the farmer, “would have been payment in full for me.”

You can’t commission a masterpiece. Human greatness can’t be externally motivated. It must be compelled from within. A magnificent obsession is the way you want to live, not just the things you want to own. A magnificent obsession is the person you want to be, not the title on your office door or business card. A magnificent obsession is the mindset that you have, not the diplomas or awards you earn. It is the worldview you claim as your own, not the collection of stamps on your passport. It is uniquely yours, like your fingerprint or handwriting.

Ask yourself this question: “If it weren’t for money, time and personal responsibilities, what would I really love to do with my life?” You and I need to answer it from our own individual perspectives, not simply answer “to help my company, family or country.” In addition to these shared visions, autograph your career and life with your own signature.

By personalizing your passion, you will experience the unlimited power from within!—Denis Waitley

Positive Outlook

Remaining positive about what the future holds allows us to put our energy into the most important thing that will help us reach our dreams—ourselves. Even though our dreams do not always happen exactly as we hope, we are most often the key to our own success. Having confidence in ourselves gives us the means to place our focus on what we need to do in a way that is meaningful and constructive. When we set our sights high and with optimism, the universe will respond in kind. By believing in yourself, the universe will listen to your positive intentions and give you the means to reach your dreams.

We get to choose our attitude

Has your life ever been in the midst of chaos? I know, I know…. I just heard a huge, resounding “Duh, Chris!” Of course, we’ve all experienced times of chaos in our lives. But what I want to talk about to you today is your attitude in the midst of the chaos.

Now, I think I might have heard a slight groan? Don’t worry, I’m not here to “scold.” Instead, my purpose is to just remind you of what it can be, or to shift a paradigm here. Into all our lives will fall times of challenges or chaos. I am of the belief that they help us forge our character, smooth the rough spots (as I wrote about in The Angel Inside) and prepare us for future challenges or equip us to help others going through similar experiences. All good, right?

Right, until we hit that brick wall that feels 20-feet thick and all of our resolve and vision crumbles and feels like 500-year-old mortar that has been ground to dust and carried away by the wind. Well, for you fans of the Disney movie Finding Nemo, it’s just like what Dory sings/says: “Just keep swimming, just keep swimming.” And not only that, but she’s happy as she goes about her business. Now, don’t read too much into my choice and say something like, “C’mon Chris, that’s just because she’s oblivious to what’s really going on around her and the seriousness of the situation.”

My point is this: We GET to CHOOSE our attitude…. Yes, we can be absolutely miserable in whatever situation we find ourselves in OR we can choose to find the nuggets, the good things even among the challenges. Sometimes you’re going to have to look really hard, but I truly believe there is always something of value that can be found in whatever our situations are.

It’s like Jim Rohn said, “You can use circumstances as a crutch or a school that will either cripple you or teach you for YOUR future.”

You Are Made for Success!

5 Reasons Why Relationships Should be Your Top Priority

5 Reasons Why Relationships Should be Your Top Priority
By Donald Latumahina
If you are like me, there may be many things you want to achieve in life. You may want to accomplish A and B, achieve C and D, and so on. Yet, you should never forget what your top priority is.

From what I learn, I realize that my top priority should be relationships. I believe they should also be your top priority. Nothing else matters more. Here are why:

1.Relationships fulfill your most important need of all

What is the most important thing people need? No, it’s not money. It’s not achievements nor recognition either. The most important thing people need is love. We all need to love and be loved. Unfortunately, sometimes we are so obsessed with other things that we forget how beautiful it is to love and be loved. Don’t let this happen to you. Love others and be loved. Feel how wonderful it is. Get a taste of love. And how do you do that? Through relationships. This is the only way. There is no other way you can love and be loved but through relationships.

2.Relationships are the place where your greatest joy comes from

One inseparable part of relationships is giving. In fact, I believe that there is no genuine relationship without giving. Whether it is giving your time, attention, money, or just a smile, genuine relationship is all about giving. And believe it or not, there is great joy in giving. We often think only about ourselves that we forget the joy of giving. Life is wonderful when we are thinking about others and not just ourselves.

3.Only through relationships can you give lasting impact to others

Which advice will you listen more, the one from someone you don’t really know, or the one from someone you love? Of course the latter. We appreciate the people we love more than anyone else. Their words sink deep into our heart, not just our mind. That’s why the most effective way to give lasting impact to others is by building relationships with them. Be their friend and care about them, and I’m sure they will listen to you and respect your opinions.

4.Through relationships you have the people to support you in times of trouble

When we face difficult times, we need other people to support us. No one can take care of everything by himself. When the world looks dark and the problem looks big, nothing is more valuable than the support of people we love. They encourage us to go through, they accompany us in the time of trouble, and they are willing to share the burden with us. The journey will become much easier.

5.Eventually, relationships are the only things that matter

When people are dying they do not think about their achievements and awards. They don’t care whether they are rich or famous. All those things become meaningless when people are face-to-face with death. All they want is having the people they love around them. They want the warm of love to be with them in their last moments. Nothing else matters. They realize that, eventually, relationships are the only things that matter. We should not wait until that moment come. We’d better realize it now.

Do You Want More Energy, Radiant Life, Health, Wealth

Do You Want More Energy, Radiant Life, Health, Wealth

and Happiness? By: A. C. R.

TRY this over on your Mental Piano each morning as the sun rises in the East.

Rise at five o'clock in the Summer and at six o'clock in the Winter months.

Now for five minutes rub your body from head to foot briskly with a dry flesh brush. Then have a quick shower, or better still, a sponge bath, and finish off with cold water and a brisk rub.

Now when you are physically pepped up, and all aglow with each cell of your outer skin radiating above the average amount of radiant life, contacting more abundant life, make yourself comfortable in a straight-backed chair.

Now for ten minutes go over the many good and unexpected things God has given to you in the past.

Fill your mind with the Positive, Constructive Sunshine of Your Thoughts, praising the Kingdom, Power and Glory of the Source of all Life. The Father Principle of all Love and Life, and all Understanding, within each one of us, that we call God.

Will that this Divine Source of all Knowledge shall direct your Thoughts and Words and Deeds.

Realize that your every Thought and Word and Deed is really a Prayer to the Divine Source of all Life, and is always establishing your exact position in the Universe, and showing your relation and unfoldment to Divine Guidance.

And now when you have raised your mental and physical and Spiritual rates of Vibrating, Radiant Life, and by willing that you shall be guided by your Inner Voice have put yourself in tune with the Infinite—Now put your Mental Thoughts in order for the Day by going over every detail of the work you are to do and are now planning out in a positive, constructive way.

Plan out your work directed by Divine Understanding from within, ever conscious of that "Wee, Small Voice"—"The Oracle of God"—that will guide your daily work in harmony with Nature's Laws of Life, when you are "In Tune with the Infinite."

This Divine Power within is unlimited in Love, Wisdom and Understanding, and is always anxious to give you everything you are willing to trust this Power to give.

Be confidential with God within, put all Fear, Worry and Doubt out of your heart.

Make the mental picture of your day's work as you wish it to be, and realize what you give to life, life will in turn give back to you; for life attracts like throughout the Universe.

Now go to your breakfast and daily work, doing each task in hand a little better than you did the day before.

Eat your breakfast and live your working day in this wonderful constructive Radiant Understanding of the abundant supply of Life that is all around you, and is a part of you, all guided by Divine Unfoldment.

Be Natural, Be Sincere, but do not become a religious fanatic.

Live each hour with a strong desire to be Kind to your horses and cattle that you feed and care for.

To the wonderful perfect grain that Sunshine, Rain and Divine Understanding has given you from the productive Soil of your Western Ranch.

Scatter Sunshine and Love as you go, to mankind, to your family, and to all life, with which you come in contact.

See and Feel the constructive love that all Life gives to you.

How your Cattle and Horses trust you and want to be where you are.

How your Saddle Horse will follow you about, ever anxious to do your bidding.

Truly you have Dominion over all Life with which you are in contact.

Then are you living a constructive life that will produce Health, Wealth and Happiness for you.

And now before you go to sleep at night, make a positive, constructive Demand to your Inner Self, to the Source of all life within you.

"I desire to do God's will, to be directed by Divine Guidance, to Radiate more sunshine, and love, each day. To do my work better and more in harmony with Nature's Laws, and to be a Man amongst Men, loved by all with whom I come in contact, by the Animals I serve and care for."

"I realize that God's Kingdom within me is the source of all my supply of Health, Wealth and Happiness."

Try this and see how wonderful is the reward of living a constructive, Spiritual Life in tune with the Infinite.

That which you resist persists

Resistance keeps us from learning more about what we resist. In order to fully understand something, we must open to it enough to receive its energy; otherwise, we remain ignorant of its lessons.
What plagues and pursues us on an inner level has a way of manifesting itself in our environment in the form of people, events, and issues that appear to be beyond our control. But all these external expressions are reflections of our insides, and it is inside ourselves that we can safely experiment with surrendering to what we fear and dislike.
It may feel scary, and we may find ourselves in the company of a lot of resistance as we begin the process of opening to what we fear. But the more we learn to surrender, and the more the demons that plague us disappear in the process, the more courageous we will become.

Take Pride in Your Efforts

Take Pride in Your Efforts

Be willing to say to yourself, “I’m on the right road. I’m doing OK. I’m succeeding.” We too frequently become adept at pointing out our flaws and identifying failures. Become equally adept at citing your achievements. Identify things you are doing now that you weren’t doing one month ago… six months ago… a year ago. What habits have changed? Chart your progress.

Doing well once or twice is relatively easy. Continuously moving ahead is tough, in part, because we so easily revert to old habits and former lifestyles. Over the long run, you need to give yourself regular feedback to monitor your performance and reinforce yourself positively. Don’t wait for an award ceremony, promotion, friend or mentor to show appreciation for your work. Take pride in your own efforts on a daily basis. —Denis Waitley http://bit.ly/cmik7u

Collectivity reduces fear

Q: What made you continue your involvement in the movement despite your fears?

“But being involved in a cause you believed in, and also working together with other people, was very important in diminishing my fear. Collectivity reduces fear. Community reduces fear. Doing something with other people reduces fear.”

A: If you believed very fervently in what you were doing, if you believed that what you were doing was right, then you were fearful, but you overcame it. Otherwise, you succumbed to those fears and wouldn’t do things that led to fearsome situations. But being involved in a cause you believed in, and also working together with other people, was very important in diminishing my fear. Collectivity reduces fear. Community reduces fear. Doing something with other people reduces fear. I’m sure that soldiers overcome their fear because they are together with other soldiers, even though they still have reason to fear. For me and other people during that time, being part of a movement you believed in and being associated with other people who believed in the same thing, helped you overcome your fear.

Howard Zinn was a political-science professor, historian, social activist and playwright, best known for his book “A People’s History of the United States.” In 1956, Zinn became a professor at Spelman College in Atlanta, a school for black women, where he soon became involved in the civil rights movement. When

he was fired in 1963 for insubordination related to his protest work, he moved to Boston University, where he became a leading critic of the Vietnam War.

Ambitiously Pursuing Your Own Self-Direction

What is the origin of true ambition? There exists really only one place to find true ambition and that is within you—in every thought, in every movement, in every motivation. Your ambition is an expression of who you truly are, your own self-expression.

Isn't self-expression really self-direction? How you think, how you move, how you motivate yourself. Ambition is a result of self-direction, and self-direction is one of the six key principles necessary for building ambition. Positive self-direction says, "I know who I am and I know where I want to go. I'm accumulating knowledge and experiences and feelings and philosophies that will help prepare me for opportunities that I know will show up without notice or any help on my part." Because you know where you want to go, you have already been working on the parts of your personality that will make you better. Working on your attitude, working on your health, working on your time management skills. Putting it all down on paper. And you constantly see yourself in the place you want to be, going in the direction you want to go.

Direction determines destination. So here is a question you must ask yourself: "Are all the disciplines that I'm currently engaged in taking me where I want to go?" What an important question to ask yourself at the beginning of the month, the beginning of the week, the beginning of the day. Because here is what you don't ever want to do: kid yourself. Kid your neighbor, kid me and kid the marketplace, but don't kid yourself, fingers crossed hoping you will arrive at a good destination when you're not even headed that way. You have to ask yourself often, "Am I?" Am I doing the disciplines that are taking me in the direction I want to go? Don't neglect to ask these important questions, questions that help determine your direction, the set of your sail, your destination.
Is this the direction I want for my life?
Is this someone else's direction?
Is this a goal I have been ingrained with since my childhood?
Is this goal my parents', my spouse's, my boss's, my children's, or is it MINE?
Ask yourself these questions and then debate them. After you have answered these questions within yourself, then take it one step further and ask, "What am I doing that is working or not working?" Debate it all. Work with your mind to figure out the best possible direction for you—your self-direction. And then ambitiously pursue your own self-direction. Let the power of your own ambition take you where you want to go, to do what you want to do, to create the life you want to live! ~ Jim Rohn

Compassion

Compassion
Compassion is the ability to see the deep connectedness between ourselves and others. Moreover, true compassion recognizes that all the boundaries we perceive between ourselves and others are an illusion. When we first begin to practice compassion, this very deep level of understanding may elude us, but we can have faith that if we start where we are, we will eventually feel our way toward it. We move closer to it every time we see past our own self-concern to accommodate concern for others. And, as with any skill, our compassion grows most in the presence of difficulty.

We practice small acts of compassion every day, when our loved ones are short-tempered or another driver cuts us off in traffic. We extend our forgiveness by trying to understand their point of view; we know how it is to feel stressed out or irritable. The practice of compassion becomes more difficult when we find ourselves unable to understand the actions of the person who offends us. These are the situations that ask us to look more deeply into ourselves, into parts of our psyches that we may want to deny, parts that we have repressed because society has labeled them bad or wrong. For example, acts of violence are often well beyond anything we ourselves have perpetuated, so when we are on the receiving end of such acts, we are often at a loss. This is where the real potential for growth begins, because we are called to shine a light inside ourselves and take responsibility for what we have disowned. It is at this juncture that we have the opportunity to transform from with! in.

This can seem like a very tall order, but when life presents us with circumstances that require our compassion, no matter how difficult, we can trust that we are ready. We can call upon all the light we have cultivated so far, allowing it to lead the way into the darkest parts of our own hearts, connecting us to the hearts of others in the understanding that is true compassion.

The Goodness of Life

The Goodness of Life

by Ralph Marston

Though there is much

to be concerned about,

there is far, far more

for which to be thankful.

Though life's goodness can

at times be overshadowed,

it is never outweighed.

For every single act

that is senselessly destructive,

there are thousands more small, quiet acts

of love, kindness and compassion.

For every person who seeks to hurt,

there are many, many more who

devote their lives to helping and to healing.

There is a goodness to life

that cannot be denied.

In the most magnificent vistas

and in the smallest details,

look closely,

for that goodness always

comes shining through.

There is no limit

to the goodness of life.

It grows more abundant

with each new encounter.

The more you experience and

appreciate the goodness of life

the more there is to be lived.

Even when the cold winds blow

and the world seems to be covered in foggy shadows,

the goodness of life lives on.

Open your eyes,

open your heart,

and you will see that

goodness everywhere.

Though the goodness of life

seems at times to suffer setbacks,

it always endures.

For in the darkest moments

it becomes vividly clear

that life is a priceless treasure.

And so the goodness of life

is made even stronger

by the very things

that would oppose it.

Time and time again

when you feared it was gone forever

you found that

the goodness of life

was really only

a moment away.

Around the next corner

Inside every moment

The goodness of life

Is there to surprise and delight you

Take a moment to let the goodness of life

touch your spirit and calm your thoughts.

Then, share your good fortune with another.

For the goodness of life grows

more and more magnificent

each time it is given away.

Though the problems constantly

scream for attention

and the conflicts appear

to rage ever stronger,

the goodness of life grows stronger still,

quietly, peacefully,

with more purpose and meaning

than ever before.
